We tend to picture a plant from the waist up — the leaves, the flower, the tidy silhouette on a seed packet. But turn a plant over and you find that most of it lives in the dark, and that the dark is busier than the light. A root is not simply a straw. It is a trading floor, and the plant standing above it is quietly running one of the oldest businesses on Earth.
Problem IWhat a root cannot reach
A plant makes its own food — that is the miracle of the leaf — but it cannot make its own minerals. Phosphorus, nitrogen, potassium, a little iron and zinc: these come only from the soil. And soil is stingy. Phosphorus in particular binds tightly to soil particles and barely moves; a root can strip its immediate neighborhood bare within days and then sit thirsty beside nutrients it simply cannot reach. Roots grow, but they grow slowly, and every centimeter costs sugar the plant would rather spend on leaves and seeds.
A root tip is less a mouth than a marketplace.
Partner IIEnter the fungi
The solution is not to dig faster. It is to hire help. Threaded through the soil are fungi whose bodies are not mushrooms but hyphae — filaments finer than any root, thin enough to slip between soil grains a root could never enter. Where these fungi meet a root, they form a partnership called mycorrhiza — literally “fungus-root.” The fungus sheathes or even enters the root's cells, and the two begin to trade.
This is not a rare arrangement. Somewhere around nine in ten land plants form mycorrhizal partnerships, and they have been doing so for more than 400 million years — long enough that many botanists suspect plants only managed to leave the water and colonize dry land because fungi were there to feed them. The forest, the meadow, the pot on your windowsill: all of them are really plant-and-fungus, working as one.
Trade IIIThe exchange rate
Here is the deal, and it is a genuine deal. The fungus, ranging far through the soil, gathers water and hard-won minerals and delivers them to the root. In return, the plant pays in sugar — carbon it has spun out of air and sunlight — handing over as much as a fifth of everything it photosynthesizes. Both sides give up something scarce to get something scarcer. It is trade in the plainest sense: each partner is better off than it would be alone.
And like any market, it has prices, cheats, and consequences. Experiments show plants can send more sugar to the fungal partners that deliver the most phosphorus, and throttle back the ones that under-deliver — while the fungi, in turn, move nutrients toward the roots paying the best rate. Neither party is being kind. They are negotiating, and the negotiation keeps both of them honest.
Why “economy” is the right word. Biologists actually model these partnerships with the mathematics of markets — supply, demand, reciprocal reward. The plant behaves like a buyer shopping several suppliers at once; the fungus like a supplier courting several buyers. No one is in charge, and yet a stable exchange rate emerges. That is a market, running silently, underfoot.
Network IVThe threads between plants
Because a single fungus can join itself to many roots, the partnerships link up. One fungal network may connect a whole stand of plants into a shared web — the thing you may have heard called the “wood wide web.” Through these connections, sugars and warning signals have been observed moving from plant to plant, and seedlings growing in deep shade sometimes appear to draw support from larger neighbors nearby.
It is a lovely idea, and worth holding carefully: how much plants truly share through these networks — versus how much the fungus simply moves things around to suit itself — is still being argued over by scientists, and honest botany means saying so. What is not in doubt is the connection itself. The plants in a patch of ground are rarely as separate as they look.

You will never see the trade happening, but you can respect it. Fungal networks are delicate: hard tilling tears them, broad fungicides kill them, and a heavy hand with high-phosphorus fertilizer tells the plant it no longer needs a fungal supplier, so it stops paying — and the partnership withers from neglect. This is why gardeners who feed the soil gently, rather than force-feeding the plant, so often grow the sturdiest things. The next time you slide a plant from its pot and see pale threads webbing the roots, don't brush them away. You are looking at its business partner.
